Google has unveiled a significant upgrade to Chrome with the introduction of its new AI Mode, designed to make web browsing more seamless and interactive.
The update allows users to view web pages alongside an AI assistant in a split-screen format, eliminating the need to constantly switch between tabs.
According to Google, this feature is aimed at simplifying how users explore information online. Instead of replacing the current page when a link is opened, Chrome now displays the new webpage next to the AI interface. This enables users to continue their conversation with the AI while simultaneously reviewing content, comparing sources, or asking follow-up questions.
The side-by-side experience is particularly useful for decision-making tasks. For instance, someone searching for a coffee maker can ask AI Mode for recommendations based on specific needs. When they open a product page, it appears alongside the AI chat, allowing them to ask contextual questions such as ease of cleaning or suitability. The AI then combines insights from the webpage with broader web knowledge to deliver more relevant answers.
Beyond browsing, Google is expanding AI Mode's capabilities to work across multiple tabs and files. Users can now include several open tabs, images, and documents like PDFs in a single query. This multi-source input allows the AI to generate responses that are more context-aware and tailored to the user's needs.
This feature is expected to benefit a wide range of users. For example, researchers exploring hiking trails can add multiple tabs into AI Mode and request curated recommendations based on all sources. Similarly, students can upload lecture notes, slides, and study materials to receive clearer explanations or additional examples for complex topics.
Google said that early testers say that this feature reduces the need for constant tab switching and helps users stay focused. By integrating browsing and AI assistance into a unified interface, the company aims to improve productivity and streamline information discovery.
The update reflects a broader shift in how web browsers are evolving. Rather than acting as passive tools for accessing websites, browsers like Chrome are becoming more intelligent platforms that actively assist users in understanding and organising information.
With AI Mode, Google is taking a step toward redefining the search experience. By merging conversational AI with real-time browsing, the company is positioning Chrome as not just a gateway to the web, but a smarter companion for navigating it.
