India Achieves Breakthrough With Kalpakkam Fast Breeder Reactor, Joins Elite Nuclear League

India has reached a major milestone in nuclear technology with the successful criticality of its 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam nuclear facility.

This achievement places the country among a select group of nations capable of operating advanced breeder reactors, a feat that even countries like the United States and France could not sustain despite heavy investments.

The reactor achieved "first criticality" on April 6, meaning it initiated a controlled and self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction for the first time. Developed indigenously, the project highlights India's growing scientific and engineering capabilities in the nuclear sector.

India's success at Kalpakkam strengthens its energy security ambitions. The reactor is expected to generate enough electricity to power millions of homes while contributing to a closed fuel cycle-minimising waste and maximising efficiency. It also supports the country's long-term goal of significantly expanding nuclear power capacity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
