India Set To Boost Nuclear Strength With Likely Induction Of INS Aridhaman

India is expected to significantly enhance its nuclear defence capabilities with the likely induction of INS Aridhaman, the country's third indigenously developed nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hinted at the development through a cryptic social media post, which was later backed by sources confirming the submarine's commissioning.

INS Aridhaman is designed to carry nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, reinforcing India's sea-based deterrence and ensuring greater survivability in line with its nuclear doctrine. It follows the earlier induction of INS Arihant and INS Arighaat, marking another milestone in India's strategic defence programme.

Weighing approximately 7,000 tonnes, the submarine features improved stealth capabilities and is powered by an upgraded pressurised water reactor developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. A key upgrade is its eight vertical launch tubes-double that of its predecessor-allowing it to carry either long-range K-4 missiles or a larger number of shorter-range K-15 missiles.

The addition of INS Aridhaman will enable India to maintain continuous at-sea deterrence, ensuring that at least one nuclear-armed submarine remains on patrol at all times. This strengthens the country's second-strike capability, a crucial element of nuclear defence strategy.

Meanwhile, during his visit to Visakhapatnam, the Defence Minister is also set to commission the advanced stealth frigate Taragiri. Equipped with modern weapon systems and designed for both combat and humanitarian missions, the vessel reflects India's growing focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

With plans for a fourth SSBN already underway, India is steadily advancing towards a robust and credible maritime nuclear deterrent.
