Instagram Tightens Teen Safety Controls in India with New Content Filters

Instagram Tightens Teen Safety Controls in India with New Content Filters

The Hans India 1 month ago

In a move aimed at strengthening online safety for younger users, Meta has rolled out enhanced restrictions for teenage users on Instagram in India.

The update introduces tighter content filters and expanded parental controls, reinforcing the platform's focus on age-appropriate digital experiences.

At the core of the rollout is a revised "Teen Accounts" framework, which automatically places users under 18 into a default content setting aligned with 13+ standards. According to Meta, this setting ensures that teens are exposed only to content considered suitable for their age group. Importantly, minors will not be able to opt out of these protections unless parental approval is provided.

The company said the initiative draws inspiration from widely accepted 13+ movie rating systems, aiming to replicate similar content boundaries within the app. "The update is designed to ensure that the type of content teens see on Instagram is broadly similar to what would be allowed in a movie rated for ages 13 and above, while continuing to minimise exposure to sensitive material."

As part of the changes, Instagram will continue restricting content categories such as sexually suggestive posts, graphic imagery, and adult-themed material. Beyond that, the platform is now tightening controls on posts involving strong language, risky stunts, and potentially harmful behaviour. This includes limiting visibility of content related to substances like marijuana.

Meta has also introduced broader safeguards across the platform's ecosystem. Teen users will no longer be able to follow or interact with accounts flagged for sharing age-inappropriate content. Similarly, such accounts will be prevented from initiating contact with minors.

Search functionality has also been updated. Queries related to sensitive or mature topics-including alcohol and violent imagery-will be blocked for teenage users, even when entered with spelling variations. These restrictions extend across feeds, recommendations, stories, and comments, ensuring a more consistent enforcement of safety standards.

Additionally, teens will not be able to access or engage with restricted content even if it is shared by accounts they already follow. Links sent through direct messages that lead to such material will also be disabled. Meta noted that its artificial intelligence systems have been upgraded to ensure that responses and recommendations remain appropriate for users within the 13+ category.

To further empower families, Meta has introduced a new "Limited Content" setting. This optional feature allows parents to apply even stricter filters on their child's account. Under this mode, more content is screened out, and interactions such as viewing, leaving, or receiving comments on posts are further restricted.

The rollout of these updated Teen Account features has begun gradually across India and is expected to expand to more users in the coming months.
