Vijayawada: The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in association with the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), is organizing the Closing Workshop of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP) Project in India at Hotel Lemon Tree Premier in Vijayawada on June 1 and 2. The workshop is being conducted in collaboration with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA).

The two-day workshop, themed "Advancing Urban Sustainability and Climate Action," will bring together representatives from the Government of India, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Municipal Commissioners and Additional Commissioners from various cities across the country, urban development experts, international organisations, academic institutions, NGOs, and stakeholders associated with the Swachh Bharat Mission and Zero Waste initiatives. More than 100 participants are expected to attend the event, which will serve as a platform for deliberating on key issues related to urban sustainability, climate resilience, solid waste management, environmental protection, renewable energy adoption, carbon emissions reduction, and innovative urban governance practices.

The workshop will also showcase successful initiatives implemented under the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot Project and facilitate the exchange of best practices among Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across India.

As part of the programme, the UNIDO Gender Equality Mobilisation (GeM) Award - 2026 will be presented to the Guntur Municipal Corporation in recognition of its outstanding efforts in promoting gender-inclusive urban governance and sustainable development initiatives. The award will be received by the Commissioner of Guntur Municipal Corporation along with his team.

On June 2, delegates will undertake a field visit to the 500 KW Floating Solar Power Plant at Jagarlamudi in Guntur district. They will also visit charging infrastructure facilities used for electric three-wheelers deployed for door-to-door waste collection activities.
