Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) chief Prof M. Kodandaram and Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Azharuddin formally assumed office as Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) on Monday.
The oath of office was administered by Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy during a ceremony attended by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, along with several ministers and elected representatives.
Speaking to the media at the Assembly Media Point after the ceremony, Azharuddin said he would dedicate himself to the development of minority communities. "I am not the captain; our captain is Revanth Reddy," he remarked, drawing a parallel with his cricketing career. He added that politics requires adapting to situations and moving forward strategically, noting that there is no concept of being "clean bowled" in public life.
Azharuddin acknowledged that he currently enjoys a larger fan base as a cricketer than as a politician but expressed confidence in expanding his political support. He thanked the Chief Minister for his encouragement and support, and also credited senior Congress leaders for their guidance.
He reiterated his commitment to public welfare and minority development, stating that the government under Revanth Reddy has already taken significant steps in that direction. He also noted that criticism from opposition parties is a part of democratic politics.
Meanwhile, Kodandaram clarified that he has no aspirations for a ministerial post, emphasising that political positions are not permanent. Responding to critics, who questioned his commitment, he asserted that he would continue to fight for public causes and prove his dedication.
He recalled facing several legal cases and hardships in the past but maintained that his work has continued uninterrupted. Kodandaram said he would focus on key issues such as fee reimbursement, the concerns of activists, and the welfare of Adivasi communities. He expressed confidence that his role as an MLC would help him carry forward his efforts more effectively.
He further stated that he would uphold the ideals and promises he made in the past, including those associated with the late ideologue K Jayashankar. Emphasising his commitment to simplicity, Kodandaram said his lifestyle would remain unchanged and assured that he would always remain accessible to the people while striving to resolve public issues.
