Meta Expands Parental Controls to Monitor Teens' AI Interactions

The Hans India 1 week ago

Meta has rolled out a new set of parental supervision features designed to give families better insight into how teenagers are interacting with its AI tools across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

The update focuses on transparency, aiming to help parents understand their children's digital habits while encouraging open, constructive conversations about AI use.

At the core of the update is a new "Insights" tab, accessible both through mobile apps and the web. This section provides parents with a weekly overview of the topics their teens have been engaging with through Meta AI. Instead of revealing exact conversations, the system categorises interactions into broad themes such as school, entertainment, lifestyle, travel, writing, and health and wellbeing. Parents can explore subcategories within each theme-for example, lifestyle may include fashion or food, while health could touch on fitness or mental wellbeing.

Importantly, the company has clarified that this feature operates strictly at a topic level rather than exposing full conversations. Even when Meta AI declines to respond to certain prompts due to safety concerns, the attempted topic will still be visible to parents. This approach is intended to strike a balance between privacy and safety, offering awareness without direct surveillance.

To make these insights more useful, Meta has partnered with the Cyberbullying Research Center to develop guided conversation prompts. These prompts are designed to help parents engage teens in discussions about their AI usage in a thoughtful, non-judgmental manner. Each prompt comes with context, explaining what it aims to uncover and how parents can approach the discussion constructively.

The new feature builds on Meta's existing safety measures for Teen Accounts. The company says its AI systems are aligned with standards similar to 13+ movie rating guidelines to ensure age-appropriate responses. When queries cross safety boundaries, Meta AI may decline to answer or redirect users to more appropriate resources. Additionally, parents already have access to tools that allow them to set screen time limits, schedule breaks, and review recent interactions.

Looking ahead, Meta is also developing proactive alerts that will notify parents if teens attempt to explore sensitive topics such as self-harm or suicide. While details are still forthcoming, the company has indicated that this feature is part of its broader commitment to digital wellbeing.

Alongside these updates, Meta has introduced an AI Wellbeing Expert Council. This group includes specialists from fields such as youth safety, mental health, and ethical AI, with affiliations to institutions like the National Council for Suicide Prevention and leading universities. The council will work closely with Meta's teams to review features and ensure that products remain safe and appropriate for younger users.

Setting up supervision is straightforward through the Meta Family Center. Parents can invite their teen via a link, after which they can customise privacy settings, manage interactions, and establish screen time boundaries. Once enabled, the system begins providing regular updates on teen activity.

Currently available in select countries, the feature is expected to roll out globally in the coming weeks, marking another step in Meta's efforts to make digital spaces safer for younger audiences.
