Meta Launches 'Forum' App to Bring Reddit-Style Discussions to Facebook Groups

Meta Launches 'Forum' App to Bring Reddit-Style Discussions to Facebook Groups

The Hans India 1 week ago

Meta has introduced a new standalone mobile application called Forum, aiming to transform how users interact within Facebook Groups. The app shifts focus away from the usual social media timeline and instead prioritises discussion-based engagement, recommendations, and community conversations - a format that closely resembles platforms like Reddit.

According to Meta, Forum is designed as "a dedicated space built for deeper discussions, real answers, and the communities you care about." The company said the app targets users who actively participate in Facebook Groups and want a cleaner, conversation-focused environment separate from the traditional Facebook feed.

The app remains connected to existing Facebook Groups, allowing users to continue engaging with the same communities without rebuilding their network. Posts, comments, and discussions shared through Forum will also remain visible inside the original Facebook Groups.

At present, Forum is available only in select markets, including the United States, and appears to be limited to iOS users. The app requires devices running iOS 18 or later and is rated for users aged 13 and above. Meta has not yet announced an official rollout timeline for India or Android devices.

One of the app's standout features is its discussion-first feed. Unlike conventional social platforms that push trending or viral content, Forum focuses on ongoing conversations within groups. The company says this approach is intended to help users discover "what real people are saying" through meaningful exchanges rather than algorithm-driven entertainment.

Forum also introduces nickname-based posting, allowing users to participate in discussions using alternate display names while still remaining tied to their Facebook identity and groups. This feature could encourage more open participation in sensitive or niche conversations.

Another key addition is the AI-powered "Ask" tab. Users can post questions and receive answers sourced from conversations across different groups, helping them discover recommendations, advice, and opinions from community members more efficiently.

For group administrators, Meta has added AI-assisted moderation tools alongside existing admin controls. The company says the AI assistant will help community managers organise discussions and moderate content more effectively.

Forum additionally supports community discovery by helping users explore conversations around hobbies, local interests, support groups, and specialised topics. The company believes this could strengthen engagement in smaller, interest-driven online communities.

This is not Meta's first attempt at creating a standalone groups-focused app. Back in 2014, the company launched a dedicated Facebook Groups application to simplify group interactions. However, the app was discontinued in 2017 after limited long-term success.

The launch of Forum appears to be part of Meta's broader strategy to experiment with standalone applications. Recently, the company also introduced Instants, a disappearing photo-sharing app that has drawn comparisons with platforms like Snapchat and BeReal.

According to reports cited by famous publications, Mark Zuckerberg has told employees that advances in artificial intelligence and software development tools could help the company launch products at a much faster pace. He reportedly discussed the possibility of building "50 new apps," although Meta is expected to begin with a smaller rollout strategy before expanding further.

With Forum, Meta appears to be betting on the growing popularity of community-driven conversations and AI-assisted social experiences as it looks beyond the traditional social networking model.
