MicrobioTx launches IBS risk score to enable early detection during awareness month

Bengaluru: MicrobioTx has introduced a new predictive tool, the IBS Risk Score, aimed at assessing an individual's likelihood of developing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

The launch coincides with IBS Awareness Month in April and seeks to address the growing burden of underdiagnosed gut health conditions in India.

IBS is estimated to affect nearly 4-8% of India's population, translating to around 40-80 million people. Despite its prevalence, the condition often goes undetected due to the absence of a definitive diagnostic test. Patients are typically diagnosed based on symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, and irregular bowel habits, leading to frequent delays and misdiagnosis.

The newly launched IBS Risk Score uses advanced microbiome profiling and metabolite analysis to identify patterns associated with the disorder. By analysing biological signals released by gut microbes, the tool offers deeper insights into gut health and helps clinicians detect early risk indicators.

According to the company, the innovation marks a shift from reactive diagnosis to proactive risk assessment. The solution builds on MicrobioTx's ongoing research in microbiome science and follows a clinical study conducted in collaboration with Maulana Azad Medical College, which validated the effectiveness of its Gut Function Test for Indian patients.

"IBS is a prevalent and underdiagnosed condition. Gut dysbiosis is an important contributing factor in its development and represents a potential therapeutic opportunity," said Dr Ujjwal Sonika, Professor of Gastroenterology and principal investigator of the study.

The data from the study has been used to develop the IBS Risk Score, which evaluates whether a person's microbiome and metabolic profile aligns with known IBS-related imbalances. This allows for better clinical decision-making and early intervention.

MicrobioTx said the new offering reflects its focus on making science-backed, accessible, and affordable gut health solutions available to a wider population. The test is currently available for purchase through the company's official platform.
