Microsoft has started rolling out a new Xbox mode-previously referred to as the full-screen experience (FSE)-for Windows 11-powered devices, including desktops, laptops, and tablets.

The feature is currently being introduced in select markets, though the company has not yet disclosed the exact regions included in the initial rollout.

This new Xbox mode aims to transform how users interact with games on Windows devices by offering a console-style interface layered over the existing operating system. It is designed to deliver a more immersive and streamlined gaming experience while still preserving the versatility of a traditional desktop environment.

At its core, Xbox mode introduces a full-screen interface optimised for controller-based navigation. This allows users to browse, manage, and launch games without needing a keyboard or mouse. The design closely resembles the familiar layout seen on Xbox consoles, providing quick access to user profiles, recently played titles, installed games, Game Pass libraries, and the Xbox Store. Despite this console-like setup, users can seamlessly switch back to the standard Windows desktop whenever needed, ensuring that productivity and gaming can coexist on the same device.

One of the most notable aspects of this feature is its ability to unify game libraries from multiple platforms. Xbox mode aggregates titles not only from Game Pass but also from other popular PC storefronts such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and EA Play. This integration creates a centralised hub where players can access their entire collection in a single, controller-friendly interface. The overall focus is on simplifying navigation, downloads, and system settings, especially for users who prefer gaming with a controller.

Microsoft initially introduced this full-screen Xbox experience in November 2025 through preview builds made available to Windows Insider and Xbox Insider program participants. The interface also debuted on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld gaming devices, which were developed in partnership with Asus, highlighting the company's broader push toward handheld and hybrid gaming solutions.

In addition to this rollout, Microsoft recently made adjustments to its Game Pass pricing. In April, the company reduced subscription costs, with Xbox chief Asha Sharma acknowledging that the service had become too expensive for many users. Game Pass Ultimate is now priced at Rs 1,089 per month, down from Rs 1,389, while PC Game Pass costs Rs 879 per month, reduced from Rs 939.

However, the price reduction comes with an important change. New Call of Duty titles will no longer be available on Game Pass Ultimate at launch. Instead, these titles will be added during the holiday season following their release. Existing Call of Duty titles will continue to remain accessible within the service. Pricing for other tiers, including Game Pass Premium (Rs 699) and Essential (Rs 499), remains unchanged.

With Xbox mode, Microsoft appears to be moving closer to blending console and PC gaming into a unified experience, offering greater convenience and flexibility for players across devices.
