The 27-year-old set the record with a best leap of 8.09 metres on his second go in the final at Scotstoun Stadium. He successfully secured himself in the list of the medal contenders despite being fouled twice during the competition.

The medal is another achievement to his collection after winning silver in Birmingham in 2022.

He expressed his happiness and said, "Two years ago, I didn't think that probably I'll be in Glasgow and represent my country. But thankful to God and I'm here winning a silver medal for my country yet again."

However, the Kerala man was unable to hide his regret at not winning a gold medal this time.

He emphasised, "I wanted to redeem the silver medal from Birmingham to gold. So, I am not satisfied with my performance. I have to keep improving my game, keep improving my skills."

Former world champion Tajay Gayle of Jamaica won the gold medal after a season-defining 8.15 metre jump, after opening the competition with an 8.08 metre jump. Gayle being the three times World Championships medallist completed the game by taking lead at the top spot and emerging as the gold medal winner.

In the last and sixth attempt, Stephen Mackenzie of Scotland won the bronze with an effort of 8.08 metre while India's Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth with a jump of 7.97 meters.

Sreeshankar's performance was consistent in all the games played and was in the race for gold until the last few games. But the fourth-round leap of 8.15 metres came as decisive, giving the Jamaican an additional gold medal.

The silver medal is yet another milestone for Sreeshankar, who remains one of the best long jumpers in India, and continues to be one of the India's leading long jumpers and is anticipated to play crucial roles in representing India in the upcoming games.

Before Sreeshankar creating the history, India's only Commonwealth Games medallists in the long jump were Suresh Babu (men's bronze, 1978), Anju Bobby George (women's bronze, 2002) and M. Prajusha (women's silver, 2010).
