Nandyal: District Superintendent of Police Suneel Sheoran informed that the Nandyal district police have penalised 1,500 persons for drunk driving and collected fined worth Rs 33,93,880 during 'drink and drive' checking across the district from March 1 to May 28. Also 17 persons were sentenced to jail.
These operations, aimed to curb road accidents, were carried out at key intersections, near schools and colleges, and in other areas identified as accident-prone zones. Those caught driving under alcohol influence were taken into custody and produced before Station House Officer (SHO) via a special report. The SHO filed charge sheets against them, who were presented before the respective local courts. The courts imposed fine on 1,500 individuals and sentenced 17 others to imprisonment.
SP Suneel said that despite police department taking numerous awareness programmes and implementing various measures to prevent road accidents in Nandyal district, accidents continue to occur frequently due to lack of behavioral change among public. Two-wheeler riders, particularly falling victim to accidents due to several reasons, including driving under alcohol influence, driving on wrong side and speeding. Many individuals are losing their lives simply because for not wearing a helmet.
