Visakhapatnam: In a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Andhra Pradesh Prisons Department, an IT-based skill development programme titled 'office assistant' was inaugurated at Central Prison, Visakhapatnam, on Thursday by district collector M Abhishikth Kishore.
With the objective of equipping prison inmates with industry-oriented IT and office management skills, the initiative was taken as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The programme was launched in collaboration with Skill Development Institute (SDI), Visakhapatnam. The inaugural batch comprises 30 inmates, with a special focus on remand prisoners, particularly young inmates involved in NDPS cases.
The two-month training programme is designed to provide practical exposure in computer applications, office administration, digital communication, office equipment handling and employability skills. Upon successful completion of the course, trainees will receive certification from SDI Visakhapatnam.
The initiative aims to enhance digital literacy, communication skills, workplace discipline and self-confidence among inmates thereby improving their employment prospects and supporting constructive rehabilitation after their release.
Speaking on the occasion, district collector M Abhishikth Kishore appreciated the efforts of the AP Prisons Department and SDI Visakhapatnam for introducing innovative reformative programmes for inmates. He observed that skill development initiatives within prisons could play a significant role in transforming lives and creating positive opportunities for inmates to rebuild their future. The collector interacted with the inmates and enquired about their interests, aspirations and willingness to utilise the training for self-improvement and rehabilitation. He encouraged them to make the best use of the opportunity to build a better future.
Later, the district collector visited the prison industries and the skill development block where he expressed satisfaction over the various vocational, industrial and rehabilitative activities being undertaken for the welfare, skill enhancement and reformation of inmates.
Prison authorities stated that the initiative highlights the department's commitment towards correctional administration through education, vocational training and capacity building with a larger objective of empowering inmates to emerge as responsible, skilled and self-reliant citizens. Central Prison Superintendent M Mahesh Babu, Deputy Superintendent Ch Surya Kumar and officials of SDI Visakhapatnam were present during the programme.
