The latest addition to the X-series from Poco brings a new "Max" variant that aims to push boundaries in power and endurance.
Known for performance-focused devices under the Xiaomi umbrella, Poco's X-series has built a strong reputation. With the X8 Pro Max, expectations were naturally high-and the device tries to meet them with a blend of performance, durability, and value.
Clean Design With Practical Build
The Poco X8 Pro Max sticks to a minimal and clean design language. While it doesn't reinvent aesthetics, it feels comfortable to hold despite its slightly larger footprint due to the big display. At 8.2mm thickness and 218 grams, the device strikes a decent balance between sturdiness and usability.
An aluminium frame combined with a glass back adds a premium touch. More importantly, the inclusion of both IP68 and IP69 ratings enhances durability, making the phone resistant to dust and water-features that are increasingly relevant in everyday use.
Bright, Smooth Display Experience
The device sports a 6.83-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, supporting Dolby Vision and HDR10+. With peak brightness reaching 3,500 nits, visibility under sunlight is strong and reliable.
Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, the display handles daily wear fairly well, though its long-term durability remains to be seen. Slim bezels and a subtle punch-hole design ensure an immersive viewing experience, especially while streaming HDR content.
Performance That Matches Expectations
Under the hood, the Poco X8 Pro Max is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9500s chipset, paired with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. Built on a 3nm process, the chip delivers strong performance for both everyday tasks and intensive gaming.
The device also features an advanced vapour cooling system, helping maintain stable temperatures during extended usage. Thermal management is effective, and performance throttling remains minimal, highlighting solid hardware optimisation.
However, the software experience is less impressive. Running on Android 16-based HyperOS, the interface feels cluttered with pre-installed apps and lacks fluidity. While Poco promises four OS upgrades, the current experience could benefit from refinement.
Cameras: Decent But Not Outstanding
The phone includes a 50MP main camera with OIS and an 8MP ultra-wide lens. The primary sensor captures detailed images, but color accuracy can feel inconsistent, often leaning toward overprocessing.
Low-light performance also leaves room for improvement, possibly due to software tuning. The ultra-wide camera delivers average results, suitable for casual shots but lacking depth and clarity in complex scenes.
Battery Life: A Major Highlight
One of the standout features of the Poco X8 Pro Max is its massive 9,000mAh battery. This allows the phone to easily last over a day and a half on regular usage.
With 100W wired fast charging and 27W reverse wired charging, the device also doubles as a power bank when needed. Battery performance is exceptional, backed by strong endurance test results.
The Poco X8 Pro Max is clearly designed for power users seeking long-lasting performance and strong hardware. While the battery and chipset deliver impressively, the software experience and camera output could use further refinement. Despite these drawbacks, it remains a compelling option in a market where prices continue to rise.
