Karimnagar: Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday strongly criticised Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, demanding that he apologise to the people of Telangana before organising the proposed 'Nav Nirman Sabha' in the State.
Addressing a media conference at the Husnabad MLA camp office, Prabhakar alleged that Pawan Kalyan had repeatedly made remarks that hurt Telangana's self-respect and identity. He accused him of acting in line with the BJP's agenda and attempting to create divisions in the State.
He said there was no objection to anyone participating in Telangana Formation Day celebrations, which are observed with pride across the State. However, holding a political meeting in the name of 'Nav Nirman Sabha' without first apologising was "not acceptable."
Referring to past statements, the Minister said Pawan Kalyan had earlier made controversial remarks, including claiming he would not eat for 11 days if Telangana was formed. "A person who made such statements should first apologise before speaking here," he asserted.
Prabhakar maintained that Telangana shares cordial relations with Andhra Pradesh and respects people of all States, but warned against comments that could hurt public sentiment. He also questioned why similar meetings were not being organised in BJP-ruled States like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh or Madhya Pradesh, alleging political motives behind the move.
The Minister further criticised Pawan Kalyan for not focusing on issues in Andhra Pradesh despite being in power, citing concerns such as unemployment, privatisation and rising fuel prices. He asked why these issues were not being addressed.
Stating that Telangana is a democratic State where anyone can hold meetings, he cautioned against provocative statements that could disturb harmony. "We respect him as a film actor, but as a political leader, if he speaks against Telangana, people will question him," he said.
Prabhakar reiterated that Pawan Kalyan must tender an apology to Telangana people before proceeding with any public meeting, warning that attempts to incite tensions in the State would not be tolerated.
