Samsung to Phase Out Messages App in the US by July 2026

In a significant shift aimed at streamlining the Android messaging experience, Samsung has announced plans to discontinue its native Messages app in the United States by July 2026. The move signals the company's deeper alignment with Google and its messaging platform, Google Messages, which will become the primary alternative for Galaxy users.

The decision was communicated through an official "End of Service Announcement," confirming that the Samsung Messages app will cease to function after the deadline. Once discontinued, users will no longer be able to send messages through the app, except in limited cases such as emergency services or pre-designated emergency contacts.

Samsung has already begun implementing restrictions. On newer devices like the Galaxy S26, the Messages app is no longer available for download. Additionally, after July 2026, the app will be removed entirely from the Galaxy Store, preventing any future installations. The transition primarily impacts Galaxy smartphones running Android 12 and above, while older devices operating on Android 11 or earlier will remain unaffected.

To ensure a smooth transition, Samsung is encouraging users to switch to Google Messages. The company has emphasised that users should "upgrade your messaging experience" by setting Google Messages as their default SMS application. To assist with this shift, Samsung is rolling out in-app notifications along with step-by-step guidance.

The process is straightforward: users need to download or open Google Messages, follow the prompt that says, "To use Messages, make it your default SMS app," and select the option to set it as default. Once completed, the Google Messages icon-recognisable by its white background and blue chat bubble-may automatically appear in the home screen dock on devices running Android 14 or later.

While the transition is designed to be seamless, Samsung has noted a few temporary disruptions. Users with devices released before 2022 may experience interruptions in ongoing RCS chats during the switch. However, these conversations are expected to resume once both participants migrate to Google Messages. Traditional SMS and MMS services will continue to function without interruption throughout the process.

Samsung also highlighted the advantages of adopting Google Messages, pointing to improved integration with Android features and support for modern messaging standards like RCS. The shift reflects a broader industry trend toward unified platforms that offer enhanced functionality and consistency across devices.

This move underscores Samsung's strategy to focus on core hardware and ecosystem integration, while relying on Google's software expertise to deliver a more cohesive user experience.
