Belagavi: Karnataka has reported its second fatality linked to Heat Stroke this season, as rising temperatures continue to take a toll on public health.

A 35-year-old municipal officer from Belagavi district succumbed after collapsing during a public event.

The deceased has been identified as Venkatesh Ballari, a resident of Raibag town. He was serving as the Chief Officer of the town panchayat in Chinchali.

According to preliminary information, the incident occurred on Monday (April 21) during celebrations of Basaveshwara Jayanti. After participating in a ceremonial photo ritual, Venkatesh reportedly joined a procession when he suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed on the spot.

He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by colleagues and locals. However, despite efforts by doctors, he could not be revived and was declared dead during treatment.

Family members and close associates stated that Venkatesh was unable to withstand the intense heat and is believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest triggered by extreme weather conditions. "He complained of uneasiness and dizziness before collapsing. The heat was unbearable," a relative said.

This marks the second reported death due to heat-related causes in the state in recent days, raising concerns among authorities as temperatures continue to soar across several districts. North Karnataka, including Belagavi, has been witnessing particularly harsh summer conditions, with daytime temperatures crossing 40°C in many areas.

Health officials have repeatedly warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, heat stroke, which can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions, especially during outdoor events and processions. Special attention has been urged for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

With the summer intensifying, the state government is expected to step up awareness campaigns and emergency preparedness in hospitals to prevent further casualties linked to heat-related illnesses.
