Bengaluru: Used car platform Spinny has announced a new Seller Protection Policy aimed at addressing growing concerns around vehicle ownership transfer and post-sale legal risks.
The initiative is designed to protect sellers from liabilities that may arise between vehicle handover and the completion of Registration Certificate (RC) transfer.
With the used car market expanding rapidly, delays in ownership transfer have emerged as a major concern for sellers. In many cases, former owners continue to receive traffic challans, legal notices, or face risks of misuse even after selling their vehicles. Spinny's new policy seeks to eliminate this uncertainty by taking full responsibility during the interim period.
Under the policy, Spinny assumes end-to-end accountability for any unforeseen issues after the seller hands over the vehicle, until the RC is officially transferred to the new buyer. This includes handling traffic challans, managing legal liabilities, and providing legal assistance in case of disputes or accidents involving the vehicle.
A company spokesperson said, "The Seller Protection Policy ensures that car sellers have complete peace of mind. From the moment the vehicle is handed over to us, we take responsibility for any complications until the RC transfer is completed."
The policy is backed by Spinny's operational track record. The company claims a 95% RC transfer completion rate within 12 months of purchase, significantly reducing uncertainty for sellers. It also maintains a 4.5-star customer rating, particularly among sellers, indicating strong user trust.
Industry observers note that traditional used car transactions often rely on third-party buyers or intermediaries, making RC transfer timelines unpredictable. This lack of accountability can expose sellers to prolonged legal and financial risks.
In contrast, Spinny's full-stack business model allows it to maintain greater control over the transaction lifecycle. Sellers can track RC transfer progress digitally and receive regular updates, ensuring transparency and accountability.
In addition to legal safeguards, the platform offers a streamlined selling experience. Sellers benefit from transparent pricing, with final offers typically within 3-4% of initial online estimates, along with same-day payment upon vehicle handover.
The company also ensures compliance with government norms, including verification of Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, and transaction documents of both buyers and sellers, aligned with guidelines from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Key protections under the policy include coverage for traffic challans issued after handover, safeguards against misuse while the vehicle is in Spinny's custody, legal representation in case of disputes, and documented proof of custody during contested periods.
As awareness around legal accountability in vehicle ownership grows, Spinny's move is seen as a step towards building greater trust and security in India's used car ecosystem.
