Meta has unveiled a new feature for Threads called Live Chats, aimed at making conversations on the platform more immediate, interactive, and community-driven.
The update allows users to participate in public group discussions while events are happening, rather than sharing opinions after they conclude. This move signals Threads' growing focus on real-time engagement, especially around widely followed moments such as sports games, music releases, and trending cultural events.
Live Chats are designed as open, dynamic spaces where users can gather virtually and react together as events unfold. Unlike traditional group chats, these sessions emphasize immediacy and shared experience. Users can easily identify an active Live Chat through a red ring displayed around the host's profile, making it simple to jump into ongoing discussions.
To enhance participation, the feature includes several interactive tools. Users can engage with live polls, countdown timers, typing indicators, and even real-time game scores. These elements aim to keep conversations lively and synchronized with the event itself, making the experience more immersive than standard comment threads.
Threads is initially rolling out Live Chats through the NBAThreads Community during the ongoing Playoffs. As part of this early phase, well-known personalities such as Malika Andrews, Rachel Nichols, Trysta Krick, David Rushing, and Lexis Mickens will host live sessions during games. This limited release appears to function as a testing ground, with broader availability expected after the company gathers user feedback and refines the feature.
Joining a Live Chat is straightforward. Users can access these discussions directly from the top of the NBAThreads Community feed or through shared links that appear in their main Threads feed. Once inside, participants can send messages, share photos and videos, post links, and react with emojis. Even if a chat reaches its participant limit, others can still follow along, react, and take part in polls. Notably, these conversations remain publicly accessible even after the session ends, allowing users to revisit discussions later.
At launch, hosting capabilities are limited to selected creators and Community Champions. Hosts can schedule sessions in advance by choosing the Live Chat option within their community, setting a time, and inviting participants. To boost visibility, these chats can also be shared across Threads and Instagram Stories.
Looking ahead, Threads has indicated that additional features are already in development. Planned updates include co-hosting options, play-by-play event updates, lock screen widgets, and the ability to share chat highlights directly to feeds. The company intends to expand Live Chats gradually, using insights from this early rollout to improve functionality and user experience before making it widely available.
With this update, Threads is positioning itself as a platform for real-time digital conversations, aiming to bring users closer to the moments they care about as they happen.
