WhatsApp has begun rolling out its new subscription-based service called "WhatsApp Plus," offering users a range of personalisation features and convenience tools on Android and iPhone devices.
The optional paid plan is currently being introduced to a limited set of users following earlier beta testing.
According to Meta, WhatsApp Plus focuses mainly on enhancing the visual experience of the app without affecting the platform's core messaging services. Regular features such as chats, voice and video calls, status updates, and end-to-end encryption will continue to remain free for all users.
The company's support documentation states that the subscription is designed for users who want more control over the look and feel of their WhatsApp interface. Among the key additions are custom themes, alternate app icons, premium sticker packs, more pinned chats, personalised ringtones, and advanced chat customisation settings.
One of the most talked-about features in WhatsApp Plus is the ability to customise the app's appearance. Reports suggest users can choose from 18 accent colours that replace WhatsApp's signature green design across different sections of the app. Subscribers also reportedly gain access to 14 alternate app icons featuring different artistic and minimalist styles.
WhatsApp Plus subscribers will additionally receive exclusive sticker packs with animated effects. Interestingly, recipients will still be able to view these stickers even if they are not subscribed to the service.
Another major upgrade comes in the form of expanded pinned chats. Standard WhatsApp accounts currently allow users to pin up to three conversations. With WhatsApp Plus, that limit reportedly increases to 20 chats, making it easier for users to organise important conversations.
The subscription also introduces additional ringtone choices for selected contacts. Users may further benefit from bulk customisation settings, allowing them to apply themes, notifications, and ringtone preferences across multiple chats simultaneously instead of configuring each conversation individually.
A report from MacRumors claims that WhatsApp Plus pricing currently starts at €2.49 per month in some European markets and MXN 29 in Mexico. Pricing could vary depending on the user's region. Some users may also receive limited-time free trial offers ranging from one week to one month.
At present, the rollout appears restricted to a small group of users running the latest version of WhatsApp on iOS and Android. However, wider availability is expected over the coming weeks.
Meta has clarified that WhatsApp Plus subscriptions renew automatically each month unless cancelled manually. To avoid renewal charges, users must cancel the plan at least 24 hours before the next billing cycle begins.
The company has also outlined several conditions for eligibility. Users must have a phone number from a country where WhatsApp Plus is officially available and must agree to Meta's Subscription Terms as well as WhatsApp's Community Standards. Subscription management can only be handled through the same app, device type, and account used during the original purchase process.
Meta also noted that only one WhatsApp Plus subscription can be linked to a single WhatsApp account.
