WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Letting Users Chat Without Sharing Phone Numbers

WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames, Letting Users Chat Without Sharing Phone Numbers

The Hans India 1 week ago

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a long-awaited username feature that will allow users to connect and chat without revealing their phone numbers.

The update, currently reaching a limited number of Android and iOS users, is expected to add an extra layer of privacy for conversations with unfamiliar contacts, community groups, and marketplace interactions.

According to reports, the feature was initially spotted during beta testing and is now gradually becoming available to select users. Similar to platforms like Telegram and Instagram, WhatsApp users will be able to create unique usernames or handles that can be shared instead of mobile numbers.

Once activated, chats started through usernames will only display the selected handle, while the linked phone number remains hidden from other users. WhatsApp is reportedly keeping the feature optional, meaning users who prefer the traditional phone-number-based system can continue using it without any changes.

How Users Can Create a WhatsApp Username

The username option is expected to appear in the Settings section of the app on both Android and iPhone devices. Users can create their handle by following a few simple steps:

  • Open WhatsApp Settings
  • Visit the profile section
  • Tap on the Username option when available
  • Choose a unique username
  • Save it after WhatsApp confirms availability

The platform will automatically verify whether the chosen username meets the required guidelines and whether it is already taken.

Rules for Creating Usernames

To reduce impersonation and confusion, WhatsApp is introducing a number of restrictions for username creation. Reports linked to the WhatsApp beta for iOS 25.17.10.70 reveal that usernames must follow specific rules.

Usernames cannot begin with "www." to avoid confusion with websites. They must include at least one alphabetic character, meaning handles made entirely of numbers or symbols will not be accepted.

Allowed characters include lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), periods, and underscores. Usernames must also remain unique and cannot duplicate names already used by other users or contacts.

The platform will also block usernames ending with domain extensions such as ".com" or ".net." Additionally, usernames cannot begin or end with a period, and consecutive periods will not be allowed.

WhatsApp is currently expected to allow usernames between three and 30 characters, although the limit could change in future updates. Each account can have only one username at a time, but users will reportedly be able to modify it later without affecting chats or account activity.

Integration With Meta Accounts Center

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is also developing a verification system tied to Meta's Accounts Center. This would allow users to connect their WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram accounts under one management system.

If enabled, users may eventually use the same username across Meta-owned platforms. However, usernames already claimed on Facebook or Instagram may not be available on WhatsApp, even if they appear unused there.

Focus on Privacy

The new feature is aimed at improving user privacy and reducing the need to share personal phone numbers with strangers. This could become especially useful for temporary conversations, online buying and selling, business communication, and large community groups.

When conversations begin through usernames, only the chosen handle will be visible to the other person, helping users maintain greater control over their personal information.
