As part of its evolving platform strategy, X is preparing to launch a dedicated messaging app, XChat, for iPhone and iPad users on April 25. Currently available for pre-order on Apple's App Store, the app marks a notable shift away from X's existing in-app direct messaging system toward a standalone experience focused entirely on private conversations.
According to the App Store listing, XChat is designed to let users "chat with anyone on X in a private, focused space built for conversation." The company emphasizes a privacy-first approach, stating that the app will operate without ads or tracking mechanisms. It will also incorporate end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the sender and recipient can access the contents of messages.
XChat brings a range of features that align with modern messaging platforms. Among its core offerings is the ability to edit or delete messages even after they have been sent. When a message is deleted, it disappears for all participants in the conversation, giving users greater control over their communication history.
Privacy remains a central theme. The app includes a screenshot-blocking feature designed to prevent others from capturing chats. Additionally, users can enable disappearing messages that automatically vanish within five minutes, making it easier to share time-sensitive or confidential information without leaving a digital trail.
Beyond one-on-one messaging, XChat supports large group interactions. At launch, group chats can accommodate up to 481 members, with plans to increase this limit to 500 and eventually 1,000 participants in the near future. The platform also introduces joinable group links, allowing users to invite others easily-even through public sharing.
The app isn't limited to text communication. XChat is expected to support cross-device voice and video calling, positioning it as a more comprehensive communication tool. Early previews suggest a smooth integration of these features, reflecting X's ambition to compete more directly with established messaging ecosystems.
The development of XChat has been underway since last year, with internal testing helping refine its functionality. Nikita Bier, head of product at X, has highlighted the introduction of joinable group links as a key enhancement, enabling seamless community building within the app.
This launch also coincides with broader structural changes on the platform. X has announced that its Communities feature will be discontinued on May 6 due to declining engagement. Users are being encouraged to transition to XChat, with a deadline of May 30 to complete the move. Group chat links within XChat are expected to play a central role in this migration.
The introduction of XChat reflects X's broader effort to streamline its services while doubling down on niche communities and personalized user experiences. Features like Custom Timelines are also part of this strategy, indicating a shift toward more tailored and private interactions.
