Xiaomi's Next Big Bet: A Revolutionary Camera Phone May Be on the Way

Xiaomi appears to be gearing up for a major leap in smartphone innovation, with fresh leaks hinting at a device that could redefine mobile photography in 2026. After recently launching its camera-centric flagship, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the company is now reportedly working on an even more ambitious project that blends advanced optics, custom silicon, and next-generation AI capabilities.

According to tipster Kartikey Singh (@That_Kartikey on X), Xiaomi is preparing to unveil multiple new products featuring cutting-edge technologies sometime after June. Among these, the company is expected to introduce a modular optical smartphone - a concept that could be the first of its kind globally. Such a system could allow users to attach or detach different optical components, similar to a DSLR setup.

This modular approach could mark a significant shift in smartphone photography. Instead of being limited to built-in lenses, users may have the flexibility to swap out optical modules based on their needs-whether it's enhanced zoom, improved low-light performance, or specialized lenses for professional-grade shots. If realized, this concept could blur the line between smartphones and traditional cameras.

Beyond camera innovation, Xiaomi is also reportedly focusing on strengthening its internal hardware ecosystem. The leak points out that Xiaomi could introduce a new flagship powered by its in-house chipset, possibly the upcoming XRING O2. Developing a custom chip has long been a strategic goal for the company. Notably, the XRING O2 is expected to be Xiaomi's second 3nm flagship processor.

An in-house chipset would allow Xiaomi to optimize performance more tightly across hardware, software, and AI systems. This could translate into better efficiency, enhanced imaging capabilities, and deeper integration of AI-driven features-especially in photography and video processing.

The upcoming device is also said to combine Xiaomi's self-developed chipset, proprietary software, and an integrated AI system into one cohesive platform. With these elements working together, the smartphone is being positioned as potentially the most powerful camera phone of 2026.

For context, the recently launched Xiaomi 17 Ultra already showcases the company's strong focus on imaging. Priced at Rs 1,39,999 in India, the device features a Leica-tuned triple rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera, along with a 50-megapixel front camera. It is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with up to 16GB RAM and UFS 4.1 storage.

The phone also offers a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 3,500 nits. Backed by a 6,000mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging, it runs on Android 16-based HyperOS 3 and comes with IP68/IP69 ratings for durability.

If current rumours hold true, Xiaomi's next move could push smartphone photography into entirely new territory, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive 2026 flagship market.
