Major schools will be closed across parts of Central Texas and New York City on Monday (January 26) in view of severe winter weather. Officials cited unsafe travel conditions and concerns for student and staff safety behind the decision.
Freezing rain covered roads across Central Texas, while snowfall spread across New York City. Districts cancelled in-person classes, shut school buildings, and shifted to remote instruction in some areas.
Why Districts Cancelled Offline Classes?
School officials said icy roads, poor visibility, and unsafe driving conditions made travel dangerous for buses, students, and staff.
In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that all public school buildings would close on Monday. The decision affected nearly 500,000 students across over 1,100 schools.

"All after-school programs, adult education, and other school-based activities are canceled," city officials said. Instruction continued remotely for most students. Monday remained a scheduled day off for high school students and students in grades six through eight.
NYC Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels said the city prepared in advance by testing technology systems, securing school buildings, and readying virtual classrooms.
Which Texas District Schools Closed?
Across Central Texas, many districts announced full closures, while a few delayed start times or had not yet issued updates.
Austin ISD closed all schools and offices on Monday. Bastrop ISD, Blanco ISD, Del Valle ISD, Fredericksburg ISD, Georgetown ISD, Harper ISD, Hays CISD, Lago Vista ISD, Lake Travis ISD, Leander ISD, Llano ISD, Round Rock ISD, Burnet CISD, Cameron ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Eanes ISD, Lampasas ISD, Lockhart ISD, and Rockdale ISD also canceled classes and activities.

Several districts said they expected to resume normal schedules on Tuesday.
Mason ISD delayed school by two hours, with buses running late. School leaders said they would decide later if a full closure became necessary.
Elgin ISD, Hutto ISD, Manor ISD, McDade ISD, Pflugerville ISD, Taylor ISD, Lexington ISD, Liberty Hill ISD, and Schulenburg ISD had not announced closures at the time of reporting.
