Community Transmission Looms Tirupati..? Authorities Call for Complete Lockdown
Tensions ran high in the temple city, Tirupati with 36 out of 50 wards declared as Containment zones with increasing number of Coronavirus cases. Health experts raised concerns over the possibility of community transmission while other parts of Chittoor have been registering alarming numbers from the past few days.
On Tuesday alone, Chittoor district reported 238 new COVID cases which was reported the highest in the state with which the total caseload crossed 3,000-mark. Shocking the health officials, Tirupati alone recorded more than 1,000 cases turning into the new hotspot in the state.
In the wake of which, authorities of four panchayats of Tirupati rural-Avilala, Tiruchanur, Padmavathipuram and Settipalli called for a complete lockdown. Citizens of these areas are asked to stock up all the essentials necessary. However, officials informed that essential commodities can be purchased from 7 am to 11 am until further notice.
In other wards, shops will be opened from 6 am to 1 pm. Confirming the same, Municipal Commissioner PS Girisha stated that with the increasing numbers, the authorities will be conducting COVID tests on all elderly persons and people suffering from prolonged illnesses.
