Delhi To Chandigarh In 2 Hours With New Expressway

Delhi To Chandigarh In 2 Hours With New Expressway

Trak 1 hr ago

Road travel between Delhi and Chandigarh could soon become significantly faster as multiple expressway projects across North India move closer to completion.

Reports said the upcoming expressway network is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from nearly 5-6 hours to around 2 hours.

The major boost is expected to come from the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway along with connected NCR and Haryana expressway corridors.

Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway Key To Faster Connectivity

The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is among India's largest highway infrastructure projects, with an estimated cost of nearly ₹38,905 crore. Designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.

According to reports, travellers heading from Delhi to Chandigarh will use a network involving the Dwarka Expressway, Urban Extension Road, Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, and the Trans-Haryana Expressway toward Ambala and Chandigarh.

Completion Expected By 2027

Reports indicated that most sections of the expressway network are expected to become operational between late 2026 and March 2027.

Construction work had earlier faced delays due to land acquisition issues in Punjab, contractor disputes, and flooding in some northern sections. However, officials reportedly said construction activity has accelerated again in recent months.

Major Reduction In Travel Time

Once operational, the expressway network is expected to drastically reduce travel duration for multiple routes across North India.

Reports said:

  • Delhi to Chandigarh travel time may reduce to nearly 2 hours
  • Delhi to Amritsar travel time may reduce to around 4 hours
  • Delhi to Katra travel time could drop from nearly 14 hours to around 6 hours

Connectivity And Economic Impact

Officials and industry observers believe the new expressway system could significantly improve logistics, tourism, and industrial connectivity across northern states.

Areas near major interchanges and expressway corridors are also expected to witness increased commercial development, warehousing activity, and real estate growth.

The improved road infrastructure is expected to reduce traffic pressure on existing highways, especially the heavily congested NH-44 corridor.

Part Of Larger Expressway Expansion

The Delhi-Chandigarh connectivity upgrade forms part of a broader highway expansion push underway across India. Several other major expressway projects, including the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway and Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, are also nearing completion.

Summary

Delhi-Chandigarh travel time could reduce to nearly 2 hours as the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and connected NCR expressway corridors near completion. Most sections are expected to become operational between late 2026 and 2027. The expressway network will improve connectivity across North India, reduce congestion on existing highways, and support tourism, logistics, and commercial development across multiple states.
