In a crackdown on illegal activities in Tripura, police in Khowai district uncovered a suspected counterfeit currency operation along with possible narcotics on Wednesday morning.

Acting on specific intelligence, personnel from the DIB staff of Khowai district and Special Branch officials from Kalyanpur apprehended a 42-year-old man identified as Kartik Debnath, a resident of West Sonatala under Khowai Police Station jurisdiction. He was intercepted in the Bagan Bazar area under Kalyanpur.

During an initial check, officers recovered suspected fake Indian currency notes valued at Rs 7,600 from his possession. He was taken to Kalyanpur Police Station for further questioning.

Following his detention, a joint team led by officers from Khowai Police Station and Subhash Park Out Post conducted a search at his residence in West Sonatala. The search led to the recovery of additional counterfeit currency notes worth Rs 13,400, bringing the total seizure to Rs 21,000. Officials also found 57 SP tablets suspected to be narcotic substances.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to trace the origin of the fake currency and the suspected drugs, as efforts continue to determine whether others are involved in the network.
