Kashmir : Top Terrorist commander associated with Musa killed in Zakura Encounter

Srinagar: In a major victory for security forces in the Kashmir Valley, a top terrorist commander Mugais Mir was gunned down in the encounter that broke out in Srinagar's Zakoora area on Friday.

Mugais hailing from Parimpora area of Srinagar has been killed after sustaining bullet wounds at Zukura this evening in which a police officer also lost his life, police sources told news agency.

A senior police officer told that the militant identified as Mugees Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Aziz Mir, who hails from Parimpora and was active since many years, had sustained bullets but managed to escape from the spot at Zukura. "We have reports that he had made a call to his family. His body has reached his home and we have started further investigation," they said.

Security forces have stated that Mir belonged to a newly created Kashmir-based Al-Qaeda cell called Ansar Ghazwatul Hind. He was also a close aide of Al-Qaeda commander Zakir Musa.

Mir was the one who opened fire at a police party on Friday. A police sub-inspector, Imran Tak, lost his life and another policeman was injured. The injured policeman is being treated in hospital and doctors have said he is out of danger.

Meanwhile, the authorities in Srinagar have imposed restrictions following the killing of the terrorist, fearing it may trigger a law and order situations. Eight police station areas will remain under curfew. Security has been stepped up in Srinagar's old city and Parimpora areas.

On Friday, terrorists travelling in a car attacked a police party in Zakura Hazratbal area of Srinagar. While Mir was injured in the gunfight that followed and later succumbed, a hunt has been launched to track down the two militants.
