Jakarta: At least 14 people died and more than 80 were injured in a major train accident near Bekasi Timur, located on the outskirts of Jakarta , late Monday night.
Details of the incident:
An express train named Argo Bromo Anggrek crashed into the rear of a stationary commuter train at the platform of Bekasi Timur station. The impact severely damaged the rear coaches of the commuter train, trapping several passengers inside.
Rising death toll:
Officials said on Tuesday morning that the death toll had risen to 14, with around 84 people injured. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals, and some are reported to be in serious condition.
Authorities have recovered 14 bodies so far and sent them to hospitals for identification. Rescue operations have been completed, and repair work on the railway tracks is currently underway. The information was shared by a senior official of the state-owned railway company.
President orders probe:
Scenes of panic were reported at the station, with families of victims gathering at the site. Prabowo Subianto visited the accident site and hospitals to check on the injured. He has directed the national transport safety committee to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident.
Preliminary reports suggest that a signal failure or technical issue may have caused the accident.
