Bengaluru: A private ambulance lost control near Wilson Garden in Bengaluru on the morning of May 1 and rammed into a fruit vendor on the footpath, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to six others.
Ramesh (49), who was running a fruit stall on the pavement, suffered serious injuries in the accident and later died while undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The injured have been identified as Nagaraj, Shivaram, Somasundar, Praveen Kumar, Brahmanand Kumar, and Pavan.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 7:30 am when the speeding ambulance developed a sudden technical fault, causing it to veer out of control. The vehicle first hit two-wheelers and an autorickshaw before crashing into the footpath stalls and pedestrians.
The ambulance driver, identified as Chiranjeevi (30), has been arrested and a case has been registered at the Wilson Garden Traffic Police Station based on a complaint filed by Ramesh's brother, Nagaraj.
Preliminary investigations are underway to determine whether the accident was due to a technical failure or rash driving. Police say that had the ambulance not hit the auto in front of it, the vehicle could have rammed into a nearby hotel entrance where several people were standing, leading to a larger tragedy.
In a tragic turn of events, it was also reported that Ramesh's mother had passed away just three days before the accident.
