Manipal: Dr Sharath K Rao assumed charge as the 8th Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) on May 1.
Dr Sharath K Rao is a well-known orthopaedic specialist and academic administrator with over four decades of experience in the medical field.
His appointment was announced in March. The institution stated that his leadership is expected to further enhance MAHE's academic standards at the global level, marking a new phase in its leadership journey.
MAHE Trust Chairman Dr Ranjan R Pai and Co-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal extended their wishes to Dr Sharath K Rao. They expressed confidence that his deep understanding of MAHE, inclusive leadership style and commitment to excellence will strengthen the institution's global reputation as a leading centre for higher education and research.
Achievements and academic background of Dr Sharath K Rao
Dr Sharath K Rao received the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London, on July 8, 2025, in recognition of his contribution to the medical field.
He completed his MBBS from Mysore University and later obtained his Diploma in Orthopaedics and MS degree from Mangalore University. He joined Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal, as an assistant lecturer in 1988.
He is an alumnus of KMC Mangalore and has served the institution for four decades in various roles. He was Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at KMC Manipal from 2009 to 2014, Associate Dean from 2015 to 2019, and Dean from 2019 to 2023. From 2023 to 2026, he served as Pro Vice Chancellor (Health Sciences) of MAHE.
Dr Sharath K Rao specialises in complex trauma care, joint reconstruction, and knee arthroscopy. He has served as President of the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association, South Indian Orthopaedic Association, and AO Trauma India. He has authored over 100 research papers in medical journals and has delivered lectures and conducted workshops in several countries. He has played a key role in strengthening global collaboration in medical education and orthopaedics.
