Hunsur (Mysuru district): A two-year-old female leopard was found dead after being shot by suspected poachers in the Hunsur forest division, officials said.

The incident took place in the Guledahalli area under the Koppa range in Periyapatna taluk. Officials suspect that hunters may have used a country-made gun to shoot the animal. The incident is believed to have occurred two days before the carcass was found.

The leopard's body was discovered on Monday in farmland belonging to Tibetan settlers, about 2 km away from Guledahalli. Forest officials reached the spot after receiving information and carried out an inspection.

During the post-mortem, three pellets from a country-made gun were recovered. A team led by wildlife veterinarian Dr Darshan conducted the examination and collected samples. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after laboratory reports are received.

Deputy Conservator of Forests R.T. Kirubnathan said the department is treating the case seriously and has begun an investigation to identify those responsible.

Minister orders inquiry

Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre has directed officials to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident. He also instructed that strict action be taken against those involved.

The minister further asked authorities to review patrolling in the area and take disciplinary action if any lapses are found. He also directed officials to strengthen the forest crime control system.
