Groundwater levels rise in Dakshina Kannada, but decline in some taluks raises concern

Puttur: Groundwater levels in Dakshina Kannada district have shown an overall rise over the past one year. However, a decline recorded in five out of nine taluks, including Puttur, has raised concern, especially in areas where water is crucial for agriculture.

The situation has caused worry even before the onset of summer.

According to data collected between February 2025 and February 2026, the district's average groundwater level improved from 12.99 metres to 11.44 metres, indicating an overall increase in water availability.

Where levels increased

Taluk-wise data shows that Bantwal, Belthangady, Sullia and Mulki recorded a rise in groundwater levels in both open wells and borewells, indicating better water availability. Ullal saw a significant increase in open wells. In Mangaluru taluk, there was a slight decline in open wells but an increase in borewells. Moodbidri recorded an increase in open wells, while borewells showed a decline.

Where levels declined

Kadaba taluk reported a drop in groundwater levels in open wells. Puttur taluk recorded a decline in both open wells and borewells, which is seen as the most concerning in the district. This may affect drinking water supply and agricultural activities during summer.

Officials said that reduced rainfall and increased water usage during February and March 2026 have led to a temporary drop in some areas.

Soil and water factors

Experts pointed out that the laterite soil in coastal regions and the rapid flow of rainwater into rivers and the sea reduce groundwater storage. They suggested measures such as rainwater harvesting, construction of check dams and efficient use of water.

Warning on future water issues

Senior geologist Davood from Mangaluru said that although there is an overall rise in groundwater levels, continued decline in some taluks could lead to serious water problems during summer. He stressed the need for improved water conservation measures.
