High Court gives government last chance to respond to Ranveer Singh plea in Kantara case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has given the state government a final opportunity to file objections to a petition filed by Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh seeking to quash a complaint registered against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

The complaint accuses the actor of insulting the Chamundi Daiva character from the upcoming film Kantara Chapter 1 by referring to it as a female ghost.

Ranveer Singh has filed a criminal petition before the High Court seeking the cancellation of a private complaint filed in a magistrate court in Bengaluru and the FIR registered by High Grounds Police Station.

The petition came up for hearing on Monday before a single-judge bench headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna.

During the hearing, the counsel representing the private complainant Prashanth Methal submitted objections to the petition. However, Additional State Public Prosecutor B. N. Jagadish sought more time to file objections on behalf of the police.

The court granted time until March 17 and said it would be the final opportunity for the state government to submit its response. The hearing was then adjourned to that date.

The court also extended its earlier interim order directing the police not to take any coercive action against the actor until the next hearing.
