Bengaluru: The Cubbon Park police have detained 13 individuals, including nine minors, for stealing mobile phones from spectators during the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28.
The arrested adults, all hailing from Jharkhand, have been identified as Sohan Kumar (20), Sanjit Kumar (24), Eshal Kumar (23), and Shubham Kumar (26). Police seized a total of 75 mobile phones, of which 70 were stolen from fans and five belonged to the accused. Earlier on March 31, Shubham Kumar and three minors were initially caught with 21 phones; the subsequent investigation led to the total number of detainees rising to 13.
The group reportedly operated under a pre-planned conspiracy, flying from Jharkhand to Bengaluru specifically to target the IPL crowd. Police suspect that Shubham is the mastermind behind a larger network that targets IPL matches across different states. Karnataka police are now sharing information with other state authorities regarding the gang's interstate activities.
Case Details
The incident occurred during the high-voltage RCB vs SRH match on March 28. Thieves took advantage of the massive crowds during the innings break when fans rushed for food and water. They also struck at the exit gates and nearby metro stations as spectators left the stadium.
Most thefts were reported near Gates 1, 2, and 3. While eight formal complaints were lodged at the Cubbon Park station, over 12 reports were filed via the e-Lost app. Police used technical surveillance to track and apprehend the suspects.
Minors used in the crime
Mastermind Shubham Kumar allegedly used minors to execute the thefts, believing they could escape legal consequences more easily. He instructed the minors to wear RCB jerseys to blend in with the fans. Under his direction, they targeted unsuspecting victims at the entrance, galleries, and metro stations.
"During the recent IPL match, several mobile phones were stolen. Thieves from other states involved in the act have been caught. Spectators must remain vigilant about their mobiles and other valuables," said City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh.
