Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has announced several initiatives related to temple development, pilgrim support and infrastructure under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department in the state budget presented on Friday.
The key announcements include the following:
- Subsidy for Vaishno Devi pilgrims:
The government plans to provide Rs 5,000 financial assistance per pilgrim for devotees from Karnataka undertaking the pilgrimage to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. The assistance will be distributed through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. An allocation of Rs 5 crore has been made for this purpose. - Revival of temple ponds:
A programme titled 'Jala Nidhi Kalyani Revival Scheme' will be implemented to restore 259 temple ponds (Kalyanis) belonging to temples under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department over the next three years. The government has allocated Rs 5 crore for the initiative. - Development authorities for major temples:
The state government intends to establish development authorities to improve infrastructure and ensure comprehensive development at Kukke Subramanya Temple and Kollur Mookambika Temple.
- Construction and renovation of state choultries in other states:
The government will take steps to construct and improve choultries belonging to Karnataka at major pilgrimage centres outside the state. The proposed works include:Construction of a new Karnataka state choultry at Varanasi, as the existing structure has become dilapidated.
Renovation of the existing choultry located on land belonging to Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt at Mantralayam, which is currently in a deteriorated condition.
Construction of a new pilgrim guest house at Srisailam Temple.
Construction of a new choultry at Tuljapur.
- Student hostel and commercial complex in Bengaluru:
A student hostel providing free accommodation and a commercial complex will be constructed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on the land belonging to Bandisheshmma Choultry near Kempegowda Circle in Bengaluru.
- Technology-based transfer system:
The government plans to introduce a technology-based counselling system to bring greater transparency and efficiency in the transfer process of officers and staff working under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
