The resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah brings to a close the longest cumulative tenure served by any Chief Minister in the state's history.
After weeks of speculation over a change of guard, Siddaramaiah stepped down having served a total of eight years and 11 days across two stints in office.
He is only the third Chief Minister in Karnataka to complete a full five-year term and return to lead the state in a second, non-consecutive tenure.
His first term ran from 2013 to 2018; he was sworn in again in May 2023. On January 7, 2026, he eclipsed the record previously held by D. Devaraj Urs, the Congress party's social justice icon, who served across two terms from 1972 to 1977 and 1978 to 1980, for a total of seven years and 239 days.
Only three Chief Ministers since 1947 have completed an uninterrupted five-year term in office: S. Nijalingappa (Congress, 1962-1968), D. Devaraj Urs (Congress, 1972-1977) and Siddaramaiah (Congress, 2013-2018).
Karnataka has otherwise been a state defined by political flux, with governments falling well short of full terms and President's Rule imposed six times since independence.
Here is a complete list of leaders who served as Chief Ministers of Karnataka and their tenures.

* After the Janata Party's poor showing in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections, he resigned on December 29, 1984, dissolved the Assembly and sought a fresh mandate. The party won the 1985 state elections and he returned to office on March 8, 1985. His second exit, on February 13, 1986, was on moral grounds after the tapping of phones of several prominent ministers came to light. He was re-elected party leader almost immediately and sworn back in on February 16, 1986, three days later. Neither gap involved President's Rule.
