Kollur police still awaiting official housing facilities

Kollur police still awaiting official housing facilities

Udayavani 4 months ago

Kollur: Employees of the Kollur police station, which covers a vast jurisdiction, spend their entire day patrolling and investigating.

However, when they return home exhausted and look forward to a peaceful night's sleep, they find themselves without official housing facilities. As a result, they are forced to live in small, cramped rented houses.

Although the revenue department has designated land near Kalyanigudde for the construction of housing quarters, the government has yet to give the green signal for the project, leaving the police personnel deeply disappointed.

28 personnel in the station

There are 28 personnel working at the Kollur police station, including the Sub-Inspector (SI), Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), constables, and women police officers. Due to the lack of departmental housing quarters, many depend on local private lodges and rented houses. A few others reside in Idur-Wandse to secure lower rent prices.

The station's jurisdiction spans across distant areas such as Kollur, Jadkal, Halkal, Mudur, Salkodu, Keradi, Bellala, Wandse, Idur, Chittur, and Maranakatte, requiring the police to travel extensively.

Housing becoming expensive

For personnel living with their families, the expenses associated with private housing are becoming highly unaffordable. This situation is also impacting their children's education. While police housing quarters have been constructed across almost all parts of the state, anger is brewing within the police department over the snail's pace of progress specifically for the Kollur station.

Search for land

Most of the land surrounding Kollur belongs to the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, with only a few patches classified as revenue land. Although two separate departments came forward to sanction land for the police quarters, legal and technical issues have hindered the process for the past several years. Even when the forest department offered land inside the sanctuary, the police hesitated to accept it due to the remote distance.

Land identified near Kalyani Gudde

Following years of persistent efforts, the revenue department finally sanctioned about 50 cents of land near Kalyanigudde to the police department. A formal proposal has been submitted to the government through the department for the construction of a building consisting of 24 housing quarters. Preparations are reportedly underway to initiate work through tenders as soon as the government issues approval.
