Lakshadweep: The Lakshadweep administration has significantly simplified the process for tourists to obtain entry permits to the islands.
Several key relaxations have been introduced with the aim of boosting tourism.
According to a notification issued on April 29, 2026 (Wednesday), officials stated that many earlier restrictions for tourists have now been removed. This will make the travel process smoother and visiting the islands easier.
As per the new guidelines, tourists are no longer required to obtain sponsorship from a local resident or any organisation. This requirement had earlier acted as a major hurdle for many travellers planning to visit Lakshadweep.
In addition, the administration has also removed the mandatory submission of a police clearance certificate from the traveller's home state. Instead, after the application is submitted, the Lakshadweep Police will carry out security verification internally.
Key changes in permit rules
As per the new notification, tourists must apply for entry permission at least 14 days before their travel. This will give authorities sufficient time to complete security checks. Each application must clearly mention the islands to be visited and the travel dates.
It is also mandatory to provide details of all islands that will be passed through during the journey. Transit (intermediate halt) is allowed only at Kavaratti or Agatti islands, and the maximum permitted stop duration is 12 hours.
Travel advisory and application review
Officials said that applications for Lakshadweep travel will be reviewed only after ensuring that all eligibility criteria are met, and approvals will be based on the overall quality of the application.
Tourists have been advised not to book flight tickets or accommodation before receiving official permit approval, as there is a possibility of last-minute cancellations.
Additionally, especially during the peak tourist season from October to March, authorities have urged applicants to submit their requests as early as possible. Permits will be granted based on the "priority of application submission."
