Udupi: Malpe fishing harbour, known as an all-weather port and a major hub for fishing activities in Karnataka, is facing concerns over lack of proper maintenance, basic infrastructure and security arrangements.
The harbour handles transactions worth crores of rupees daily and provides direct employment to thousands of people. Despite its importance, fishermen and local stakeholders have raised concerns about inadequate facilities and poor upkeep.
According to fishermen, the private agency managing the harbour is mainly focused on revenue collection and is not paying sufficient attention to maintenance. Officials from the concerned departments are located nearby, but issues remain unresolved despite repeated requests from fishing communities and associations.
The harbour accommodates over 1,500 deep-sea fishing boats, along with more than 1,000 purse seine and trawl boats that arrive daily or every few days. Fish auction activities begin as early as 3 am every day.
Locals said that there are no proper entry restrictions, and anyone can access the harbour area without checks. Parking and vehicle movement related to fishing activities are also difficult due to lack of planning and regulation.
No proper security arrangements
A police check post was earlier proposed within the harbour premises for security purposes. A temporary check post had been set up at the entrance during the 2025 fishing season, but it is currently not functional. A permanent check post has also not been established.
Fishermen have reported an increase in fish theft incidents in recent times. There are no CCTV cameras or dedicated security personnel at the harbour. Although regular police patrolling was suggested, it is not being implemented effectively, they said.
Officials respond
Fisher leader N. T. Ameen said the harbour is in a state of disorder despite generating significant revenue. He stated that repeated appeals have been made to authorities seeking better maintenance, cleanliness and improved facilities, but no action has been taken so far.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swarupa T K said no formal written complaints have been received regarding the issues. She added that the department is monitoring the maintenance of the harbour.
