Mangaluru: The police department has already implemented several measures, including cameras, to curb traffic violations and excessive speeding on highways passing through the city and its outskirts.
Moving forward, the department has now introduced laser-based speed gun cameras, further tightening surveillance on motorists.
This device is being utilized in light of the increasing rate of accidents. Speed limits and traffic direction signboards have been installed on National Highways 66 and 73. Warning signs have also been placed at identified "black spots" where accidents occur frequently. To check overspeeding on major roads, traffic police are now relying on modern "Laser Track" speed gun camera technology. Vehicles traveling on the road are monitored through these cameras, and e-challans, complete with photographic evidence, are being issued against violating vehicles.
Inspection via laser beams
This device projects a laser beam onto the vehicle and calculates its speed in an instant. If the set speed limit is exceeded or rules are violated, it automatically records the vehicle's image, registration number, time, and speed details. Evidence is also available in video format, providing definitive proof for imposing fines. A key feature of this device is its ability to target and detect the speed of distant vehicles. It functions more accurately than handheld speed guns.
No escape for violators
In accident-prone zones, police personnel personally monitor speeds using these devices mounted on tripods. Vehicles exceeding the prescribed limit are tracked on the spot, and fine notifications are sent directly to the drivers. This device is instrumental in filing cases supported by evidence. Traffic police officials state that the chances of those exceeding the speed limit escaping are very slim.
