Meta is reportedly preparing to expand WhatsApp beyond its free services model with a new subscription tier called "WhatsApp Plus." The feature is currently being tested with a small group of Android beta users, while iOS support is expected to be introduced later.

According to a company spokesperson cited by TechCrunch, the subscription is being developed for users who want additional personalisation and organisational tools. "WhatsApp is testing a new optional subscription called WhatsApp Plus, designed for users who want more ways to organise and personalise their experience," the spokesperson said. The company added that the rollout is limited for now to collect feedback and refine the features.

The new plan is expected to introduce several premium features, including expanded pinned chats, custom chat lists, new themes, and other personalisation options.

Key features expected in WhatsApp Plus

• Expanded pinned chats:
  Users may be able to pin up to 20 chats, compared to the current limit of three in the free version.
  
  
• Custom app themes:
  Around 18 colour options, including Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Forest Green and Fuchsia Pink, are expected.
  
  
• Custom app icons:
  Users may choose from 14 alternative icons with designs such as pastel styles, cosmic themes and glitter effects.
  
  
• Premium stickers:
  Exclusive sticker packs with animated full-screen effects may be available for subscribers.
  
  
• Bulk chat list settings:
  Custom settings such as themes and ringtones can be applied across grouped chats.
  
• Exclusive ringtones:
  Around 10 new ringtones may be introduced for premium users.
