Karkala: Plastic litter has become a major concern in Karkala as the town prepares for the Maha Mastakabhisheka of Bahubali, with even the surroundings of the historic Chaturmukha Basadi being affected by garbage.

The centuries-old heritage monument, regarded as an architectural marvel and located close to the Gommateshwara Hill, is now surrounded by discarded plastic bottles and food packets.

Once known for its scenic beauty amidst nature, the heritage site is increasingly turning into a dumping spot due to the irresponsible behaviour of some visitors.

Despite the Karkala City Municipal Council placing dustbins at several locations, plastic waste continues to be found scattered around the premises.

Visitors coming to see the Basadi are reportedly throwing used plastic water bottles on stone pathways and grassy areas around the monument instead of using the bins.

This has not only affected the beauty of the sacred and historic site but has also led to environmental pollution. Throwing waste near such an important monument is also seen as affecting its sanctity.

Locals demand strict action

Local residents and environmental activists have expressed concern over the situation.

They said that tourists visiting the town must respect its history and heritage, and called it unacceptable to dirty the surroundings of such a beautiful monument.

They have urged the Archaeology Department and local authorities to take strict action.

Many residents have also suggested that authorities use CCTV surveillance to identify those littering and impose double fines as a warning.

Awareness drives continue

Several youth groups, including the Swachha Karkala team, have been conducting awareness campaigns on cleanliness in the town.

They regularly carry out weekly cleaning drives on roadsides, lakes and hill areas to create awareness among the public.

However, despite these efforts, people continue to throw plastic and other waste in public places.

Plastic-free heritage zones the need of the hour

Next year, Karkala's Jain pilgrimage centre is set to host the world-famous Mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Bahubali Swamy.

With lakhs of devotees and tourists expected to visit for the historic event, making heritage areas such as Gommata Betta and Chaturmukha Basadi completely plastic-free has now become an urgent necessity.
