Speculation grows over K Annamalai's future amid reports of possible BJP exit

Tamil Nadu: Discussions have intensified over the political future of former Karnataka IPS officer K Annamalai, with reports suggesting that he may resign from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and consider his next political move after consulting his supporters.

According to sources, Annamalai is expected to meet BJP national leaders, including party president Nitin Nabin, and other senior leaders in New Delhi on Tuesday and submit his resignation letter. It is learnt that he has decided to quit the BJP and will discuss future plans with his supporters before taking a final decision.

Annamalai served as the Tamil Nadu BJP president for four years. Recent political developments in the state have triggered fresh discussions about his future. Actor-politician Vijay's TVK party recently secured victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and formed the government. Political observers have pointed to this development as evidence of the growing influence of regional parties in the state.

After being removed from the post of Tamil Nadu BJP president to facilitate the party's alliance with AIADMK, Annamalai continued to work without publicly expressing dissatisfaction. However, reports suggest that his strained relationship with AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami became a factor in subsequent political developments.

It is also reported that during discussions over the NDA alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections, a condition was allegedly placed that Annamalai should not be given a ticket.

Annamalai had earlier stated publicly that the BJP could gain popularity in Tamil Nadu by contesting elections independently.

Reports also indicate that dissatisfaction emerged among some of Annamalai's supporters after he was denied a ticket from the Singanallur constituency, although he later said that he had himself declined the ticket.

His limited participation in the recent election campaign has also led to speculation that he had begun distancing himself from the BJP.

Remarks on language policy

Annamalai had publicly criticised the Central government's three-language formula through a post on his X account. The remarks reportedly surprised BJP leaders.

The language issue remains a sensitive subject in Tamil Nadu, and his criticism of the three-language policy of the Prime Minister's government is said to have attracted attention within political circles.

Despite the ongoing speculation, some leaders believe Annamalai will remain in the BJP and may be given a significant role by the party leadership. However, discussions continue over whether he will stay in the BJP, form a new political party, or choose another political path.
