Gundlupet: A rare thorium-bearing mineral deposit has been identified in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district during a mineral survey conducted by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), officials said.
According to Chamarajanagar Senior Geologist Rajesh from the Department of Mines and Geology, the survey carried out by the GSI last year identified deposits of monazite, a rare mineral containing thorium and uranium, in Kootanur and the outskirts of Gundlupet town.
Officials said the survey covered more than 700 acres, of which around 20 acres have been identified as the core area. The quantity and quality of the mineral deposits will be determined after detailed scientific studies in the next phase.
The Centre has initiated the auction process for granting mining rights. Mining activities are expected to begin after the auction process is completed.
Meanwhile, officials said a preliminary survey has also been conducted in Ramapura and Ajjipura areas of Hanur taluk to assess the possibility of gold deposits. A second phase of exploration will be taken up after the survey report is received.
Importance of thorium
Monazite is a reddish-brown rare mineral and a major source of thorium and uranium. Thorium is considered an important fuel for advanced nuclear power generation.
The mineral is also used in aerospace, jet engines, specialised alloys, welding equipment and several other high-technology industries. Officials said the discovery could be significant for India's energy security, industrial growth and strategic mineral resources.
