A live concert held at NESCO Ground in Mumbai turned tragic after two students reportedly died following a suspected drug overdose during the event.
The deceased, a male and a female student aged between 20 and 22 years, had attended the concert on the night of April 12 along with their friends.
According to ABP news reports, panic broke out after several people at the venue reportedly began facing breathing difficulties during the programme.
The two students were immediately shifted to a hospital, where doctors later declared them dead.
Police begin investigation
Mumbai Police have started an investigation into the incident and have arrested five people, including event organisers and persons known to the victims.
Officials said they are examining whether there was any role of negligence or involvement in the alleged consumption of drugs.
Statements of other attendees who were present at the venue have also been recorded.
Police said organisers and operators connected to the event are being questioned as part of the investigation.
A forensic examination is under way to determine the exact cause of death and identify the substance that may have been consumed.
Venue authorities respond
A spokesperson for NESCO expressed condolences over the deaths and said the organisation is fully cooperating with the authorities.
The spokesperson said all relevant information and required assistance are being provided to help establish the facts at the earliest.
The venue authorities also stated that they would not comment further as the matter is currently under investigation, while reiterating their commitment to safety and compliance standards.
Drug angle under probe
Initial reports indicate that the victims may have consumed drugs during the concert.
Several other attendees are also said to have experienced breathing distress, leading to emergency medical attention at the venue.
Police said confirmation on drug use will depend on the forensic report.
The investigation is currently focused on tracing the source of the suspected substances and fixing responsibility.
