Yellapur: Two youths were killed on the spot after the scooter they were riding collided head-on with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus while attempting to overtake a car near Chikkamavalli Cross on National Highway near Yellapur on Sunday (July 5) evening.
The deceased have been identified as Sumeet Hanamanalli (18) and Manjunath Shekhar Gowda (27), both residents of Old Hubballi near Indi Pump.
According to police, the KSRTC bus (KA-31 F-1664) was travelling from Karwar to Sindhanur when it reached Chikkamavalli Cross. At the same time, the scooter (KA-63 EB-8690), travelling from Yellapur towards Hubballi, allegedly tried to overtake a car at high speed and in a rash manner before crashing head-on into the oncoming bus.
The impact of the collision caused severe head injuries to scooter rider Manjunath and pillion rider Sumeet. Both died at the scene.
Police said neither of the two riders was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The scooter and the bus were damaged in the collision.
Based on a complaint filed by bus conductor Suresh Gubbevadi, Yellapur Town Police have registered a case against the deceased scooter rider for allegedly causing the accident through rash and negligent riding. Further investigation is under way.
