Stock market on Monday, May 25
The equity benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, surged in the early trade on Monday, May 25, supported by a sharp correction in crude oil prices and a rally in global markets amid improving sentiment surrounding the US-Iran negotiations.
The 30-share BSE SENSEX jumped 908.98 points to 76,317.85 in the early trade. The 50-share NSE's NIFTY50 surged 262.65 points to 23,977.70.
From the 30-SENSEX firms, Mahindra & Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Larsen & Toubro, and InterGlobe Aviation were among the biggest winners.
Tata Consultancy Services and Sun Pharma were the laggards.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, tanked 5.58% to trade at $97.76 per barrel.
Stock market experts said the week has started on a positive note, with crude oil prices falling nearly $5 to slip below the $100-per-barrel mark amid expectations that the US and Iran are nearing a deal.
Analysts added that the market will closely watch for more clarity and certainty, as several similar expectations have failed to materialise since the beginning of the war.
They further noted that if the anticipated deal goes through and crude prices continue to soften, it could emerge as a turning point for the market.
In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei 225 index and Shanghai's SSE Composite index were trading higher. Markets were closed in South Korea and Hong Kong due to holidays.
US markets ended in positive territory on Friday.
Stock market analysts noted that crude oil prices have corrected sharply, marking a significant pullback from the recent highs of around the $100-105 per barrel zone.
Central government administrative offices
The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, in its press release issued on Friday, May 22, said all central government administrative offices located in Delhi/New Delhi shall remain closed on May 28, 2026, on account of Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) (in place of 27th May, 2026).
