The sudden deluge left communities struggling to cope, damaging homes, roads and essential services. While rescue teams and authorities continue relief operations, some disturbing videos circulating on social media have sparked concerns over alleged incidents of looting during the crisis.
Videos Show People Allegedly Taking Gas Cylinders
Several videos being shared online, claiming to be from flood-affected areas of Nepal, appear to show people collecting gas cylinders washed away by floodwaters.
In one video, gas cylinders alongwith regulators and pipes can be seen floating along with flood debris. Some people are seen entering the water and retrieving the cylinders.
Other videos circulating on social media also appear to show individuals carrying gas cylinders away from flood-hit areas.
Alleged Jewellery Theft From Body
Another video being widely shared on social media allegedly shows two persons removing gold earrings from the ears of a body that was swept away in the floodwaters.
The videos have triggered anger and debate online, with many questioning the actions of people allegedly taking advantage of the chaos during a humanitarian crisis.
However, the authenticity of these social media videos and their exact location could not be independently verified.
Rescue and Relief Efforts Continue
The Nepal floods have created a massive humanitarian challenge, with rescue teams working to locate missing people, provide emergency assistance and restore essential services in affected areas.
India sends more aid to Nepal while disaster personnel on standby
India has dispatched a second tranche of relief supplies to flood-affected Nepal on Thursday, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said.
"A second flight has just taken off, carrying 37.5 tonnes of HADR (Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief) material, medicines and food packets for Nepal," he said in a post on X, accompanied by a video which showed the material being loaded onto a military aircraft.
On Wednesday, India had sent 10 tonnes of aid material, including essential medicines.
However, no disaster relief team has been sent to sites so far, India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) IG Narendra Singh Bundela said in a press conference on Thursday morning.
"At present, no NDRF team has been sent to Nepal. Teams have been kept on standby. If a request is received from the Nepal government and the Government of India decides accordingly, an NDRF team will be sent," several media outlets reported him saying.
