A tragic accident at Pune's Tolani Maritime Institute has claimed the life of a 20-year-old student after a basketball structure collapsed during a morning workout session.
He sustained severe head injuries and began bleeding profusely. Fellow students and institute staff rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Vishal, a native of Basti in Uttar Pradesh, had enrolled at the institute in 2024 and was pursuing a four-year B.Tech course.
Institute principal Dr Sanjeet Kanungo termed the incident deeply unfortunate. He stated that Vishal was using the hoop for exercise when the frame collapsed, leading to fatal injuries. The institute has assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to determine the cause.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Authorities are examining whether the structure had rusted or suffered from faulty fittings that may have caused the collapse.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the safety and maintenance of sports infrastructure. Similar accidents reported in recent months in Haryana have also resulted in fatalities, raising serious questions about oversight and upkeep of sports facilities across the country.
